Like angels dancing on the head of a pin

Ever notice that microscopic dimensions are often given in relation to the width of a single human hair? “That fiber there is less than a third the width of a single human hair.” It must be important to mention a “single” hair. Scientists don’t want us thinking they’re talking about our entire head.

Do you know “off the top of your head” how wide one of your hairs is? Upon hearing something like the above, do you immediately reach up, yank out a hair (sorry my bald friends, you can use armpit hair) and stare at it trying to conceptualize a third of it?

They ought to just state the measurement for all the good it’s doing them to try and create a metaphor for something that thin. And use the metric system. We don’t know what that’s all about, either.

And while I’m on the subject of worn-out metaphors, on the other end of the scale, why is everything compared to the length of a football field? Why not say 100 yards? Not everybody’s a fan of U.S. football. There’s also the economy of words to consider.

People need to use clichès and metaphors selectively, carefully. Sometimes they make more mischief than provide clarity.

GPD08

Inspired by Gary Vaynerchuk, today has been declared Good People Day.

I want to try to get the WHOLE INTERNET community behind this mission I have to make sure that tomorrow people write and talk and blog and twitter and just flat out SING about people that are AWESOME and GOOD. It is time that we take control of the fact that WE are the media and pump out a day tomorrow that will make NOISE across this WORLD!

We are so overwhelmed at times by news about bad people we forget that they are the minority. The vast majority of people are kind, decent, well-meaning folk. They’re the people that will stop on the road to help when you have a flat tire, who help you with a computer problem, who listen when you’ve had a tough day, who care about you.

There are too many good people in my life for me to single out any specifically. So let me offer to all of you my thanks and gratitude for being my friend, and for being good people. You inspire me, you motivate me, you encourage me to be better today than I was yesterday, to enjoy every day to the fullest, to not get bogged down by adversity.

You are all good people. Thank you for being you.

Wi-Fi Mania

My local Von’s offers free Wi-Fi.  Any business that offers its customers free connectivity ought to be applauded, but…a grocery store?  Am I supposed to wedge my laptop into the child seat and surf the web as I try to decide between tuna and ham for my sandwiches?  Will I be tempted to send out a Twitter to garner opinions on which brand of toilet paper is superior?

Where I eat, where I might sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, where I stay for the night; yes, I will be thankful for the opportunity to wirelessly access the internet.  Where I buy my toothpaste, not so much.
